How to Budget a Healthy Lifestyle Efficiently
Food prices are continuing to increase and have been increasing drastically over the past 5-10 years. In the year 2021 alone, food inflation was up by over 6% according to the USDA. This increase has become a challenge for our society today when it comes to healthy living. As a low income household, it can be difficult to purchase the items you were once able to purchase happily. Well, I am here to tell you that you can still purchase those and choose a healthy lifestyle while budgeting.
First, we have to start by choosing a grocery store or brands best suited for what is needed. Most lower priced brands will include great value, good & gather, bird’s eye, or season’s choice. These brands can be found at Aldi’s, Kroger, Target, and Walmart. Aldi being the cheapest option for all food products including fresh produce. It is important to choose a grocery store with a variety of options to allow you to compare prices as well as choose foods best suited for you.
Fresh produce is our target when grocery shopping but it can be higher in price. This can sometimes bring a challenge so i’m here to say there is absolutely nothing wrong with frozen produce. Frozen produce is high in its nutritional value and rich in flavor. This form of produce is just as beneficial as consuming it fresh. Another easy and affordable option is canned produce. Canned fruits and vegetables are also just as nutritious as the fresh product. When choosing canned fruit look for labels with no sugar added, unsweetened, or fruit in 100% fruit juice. When choosing canned vegetables, look for lower sodium options. Both frozen and fresh can provide you and your family with the nutritional value needed. These options are great for budgeting, low income, or even for those who are trying to save money.
Another idea, buying in bulk may seem scary at first but it may be more cost effective long-term. Research has shown that buying in bulk can be anywhere between 20-30% cheaper than normal grocery shopping. However, when purchasing bulk items be sure that the cost of the item is reasonable. My recommendation of items to buy in bulk would be pre packaged snacks such as jerky, protein bars, popcorn, and nuts or seeds.
Overall, when grocery shopping on a budget it is important to watch out for sales and coupons in your area. My last greatest tip, grocery shop with a full belly and go in with a list and a plan. This will help you to stay on track and only buy what is truly needed for your upcoming week of eating.
