What is Red Dye 40 & How Does It Effect Our Health?
Red dye 40 is a synthetic food dye added into a variety of foods we eat. This is most seen in prepackaged snacks and meals. The msot common products you see this dye in are ice cream, soda, sports drinks, gummies, and some over the counter medications like cough syrup. It is important to review every label before buying something if you feel red dye effects you. This additive is approved by the FDA.
So, how do you know if red dye effects you and your child? Some more intense symptoms include skin reactions, gastrointestinal issues, or respiratory issues. Now, less intense symptoms include hyperactivity, irritability, depression, asthma, sneezing, and headaches. Obviously, if these symptoms occur it is important to speak with a physician or think about allergy testing.
The Cleveland Clinic has observed studies that show that red dye 40 has been linked to hyperactivity and an increase in ADHD symptoms in children. They have also observed that if a child reduces or cuts out red dye then behavior and attention is improved. So, how do you know if red dye is the reason you feel the way you do? Begin by slowly cutting out foods or snacks with the red dye in them. Then, observe behavior over a weeks time and see if there is a change. You can slowly introduce these foods back into the diet to see if that has effected behaviors. Overall, red dye is a safe additive as approved by the FDA but, that doesnt mean it cant effect some more than others. Be proactive by reading food labels and checking medications in your home!
